We provide you with an opportunity to see (also with a guide) the Gniezno Doors – built around 1175 during the reign of Mieszko III the Old, and being one of the most valuable monuments both in Gniezno and in the whole of our country.

Due to the craftsmanship with which they were made, they often used to be called Porta Regia, i.e. the Royal Doors. This monument is a work of art of the Romanesque period. The decorations, motifs and the story of the life of St. Adalbert which can be found on them, indicate the special role of the Saint in the world and culture of the 12th century. Apart from scenes from his life and others depicting the social reality of the time, religious images, such as Christ, are also depicted.

To this day, we are unable to determine who commissioned the work or who was the craftsman working on it. There are several hypotheses which may also point to a German or Czech source of inspiration.

We encourage you to visit (it is also possible with a guide) this unusual monument, which is a pride not only for Gniezno, but also for our whole country. You are cordially invited – see history with your own eyes.
